Welcome to the website of St Stephen’s Roof Fund. St Stephen’s is a Grade II listed Church of England church on Uxbridge Road at the heart of Shepherds Bush. Since 1850 the church has been an oasis of peace in a busy city and today it is the home of a caring Christian community. The Parish Church of St Stephen & St Thomas is a registered Charity, number 1133759.
Thank you to our silent donors
Over the months and years, our funds have been silently boosted by invisible donors, people who have taken to heart our fundraising efforts and dug deep into their pockets. Sometimes these are one off donations (perhaps to commemorate an event or person) and some people donate regularly, month by month. This commitment is a moving act of generosity and demonstrable sign of discipleship. From the whole Roof Fund Committee and from the PCC at St Stephen’s, we say most sincerely to all our silent donors, thank you.
The Roof is in urgent need of renewal
- The slates are 170 years old and are brittle and fragile
- The nails holding them have rusted away
- Wind dislodges the worn out slates and they slide off the roof causing a danger to people below
- Where the slates fall off, there are holes in the roof
- Water is damaging the roof timbers and the interior of the church
- Each time a slate is replaced, the adjacent slates also break up
- The gutters and downpipes are rusted and broken and need to be replaced
- Action within one year is critical
Latest news, Summer 2020.
All permissions are in place, we have completed surveys and planning, the work has been costed. As soon as we are in sight of our funding target we can begin work. As of July 2020, the shortfall in funding is £67,000. We are making applications to grant giving bodies, but there is an urgent need for your generosity as well, since much funding has been redirected to Covid-19 affected causes. We aren’t permitted to begin the work until sufficient funds are either present or pledged, so we are approaching the final push, and this is now urgent.
There is another reason for the urgency of this appeal. We are registered with the Listed Places of Worship Grant Scheme. This scheme allows us to reclaim roughly 90% of the VAT that will be payable on the work to replace the roof. However, the fund will close for applications in March 2021, so we hope to have achieved the major part of the works by then in order to take advantage of the grant offered.

RICH HALL’S HOEDOWN
October 18, 2019
Funds were further boosted by an evening of music and comedy, kindly donated by Rich Hall. Rich hosted a really entertaining evening, bringing in his showbiz friends to support the show, including special guests, witty musical duo Flo and Joan, among other contributions. Our thanks to them all, especially Rich’s backing band, his guest performers and all the volunteers.
The evening, held at Bush Hall, added a total of £5,525 to the Roof Fund, and was a rousing finale to the fundraising year. Special thanks to Karen, who organised it all.
ANNUAL CRICKET MATCH v ST STEPHEN’S SCHOOL 2020. September 14th in the Cricket field at Chiswick House saw the third such event, which was kindly organised by Chris Wren. Children’s and adults teams were fielded and all played brilliantly. The Church children’s team won their match and the School parents won theirs. Honours even! Thank you to all who wielded bat and ball, helped on the day, baked cakes for the event (and ate them) and applauded the players. More of a post-holiday get-together than a fundraiser, the afternoon did however raise £350.
DINNER AND AUCTION, 2018 Thursday 22nd November 2018 in St Stephen’s Parish Hall. 81 people attended the auction, 17 lots were auctioned live and a further 17 were included in the silent auction. Auctioneer Mr Henry Bowring conducted the sale, with a flair that demonstrated his professional lineage through London’s grand auction houses. The Lots being auctioned included three holiday homes (France, Portugal and the Cotswolds), several cultural experiences (Palace of Westminster, Sotheby’s, Wallace Collection, photography with one of the masters) parties and fun things for children to do (Sharky & George, Kidzania, Bouncers), wine, luxury goods, dance, sporting, fitness and pampering experiences, special books and many pictures. The evening raised a grand total of £12,630. Special thanks go to Mr Henry Bowring for conducting the auction, to our friends at Ayam Zaman Restaurant for providing the delicious buffet dinner, to all members of the committee who worked very hard to make the evening happen, to our donors for giving such amazing things to sell and to those who bid so enthusiastically to buy them. It was a convivial and sociable evening, which was enjoyed by all who attended. Some photos of the evening are below:
RUN FOR THE ROOF REV BOB RAISED £420 BY RUNNING FOR THE ROOF … IN THE ENDURANCELIFE HALF MARATHON, 10 NOVEMBER 2018, GOWER PENINSULA, SOUTH WALES https://www.endurancelife.com/gower Several generous people sponsored Bob for this 14 mile Half-Marathon which he ran in aid of St Stephen’s Roof Fund. “Knowing that I am running to raise money for a new roof for St Stephen’s will motivate my tired legs towards the end of the run.” Thank you, Bob!
CRICKET MATCH, ST STEPHEN’S CHURCH Vs ST STEPHEN’S SCHOOL Saturday September 15th at Chiswick House Cricket Grounds saw the second Church v School Cricket Match. Meticulously organised by Chris Wren, adults’ and children’s teams from church and school held a full day of matches, and although the sides were evenly matched in sporting skill, the church side won both matches, the adults’ match by just 40 runs and the children’s game in the last over. Spectators, players and their families brought picnics and made a day of it, enjoying a sociable start to the new school year and a chance to support the Roof Fund at the same time. Tea and home made cakes were enjoyed by all and a total of £1000 was raised from cake sales, sales of token ‘roof slates’ and players’ fees, the proceeds being shared equally between the Friends Of St Stephen’s School and St Stephen’s Roof Fund. TABLE SALE Sunday 9th September, 2018 This was not a sale of tables, but of all kinds of items, although there were, by complete coincidence two very attractive tables in the sale. People kindly donated new and pre-loved household items, good quality children’s clothes, shoes, toys, unwanted gifts, unused toiletries, nearly new adult designer clothes, skating boots, even a bicycle, but the best sellers were Mrs James’s home made cakes, topped only by books and DVDs, which were hugely popular. Thank you everyone who helped, by donating, selling or buying, we added a total of £675 to the fund on the day.
BINGO NIGHT, Wednesday 18 April, 2018
By kind permission of Headteacher Mr Michael Schumm, a Bingo Evening was held in the School Hall at St Stephen’s School. Participants went wild over a delicious home cooked lasagne and desserts, and meanwhile serious concentration was required to complete the bingo cards. Several fabulous raffle prizes were won by people in the church, school and wider community of Shepherds Bush; the prizes included a Fortnum & Mason Grocery Hamper and a case of Chateau Langoa Barton 2009 Grand Cru Classé. A full list of the prizes and the winners can be viewed on the notice board inside St Stephen’s Church.
A stunning total of £5,685 was added to the Roof Fund and as the photos below show, everyone who came had a great evening.

CRICKET MATCH vs. ST STEPHEN’S SCHOOL Saturday 16 September, 2017, Chiswick House Cricket Ground Church and school each fielded a children’s and an adults’ side; the children were extremely proficient in the game, while some adults, who claimed not to have played for several years, rediscovered their competitive form, resulting in two keenly fought matches. St Stephen’s Church narrowly won both games, and the trophy was presented to the Vicar by Adam Mountford producer of BBC’s Test Match Special.
Players and spectators enjoyed a cricket tea offering a sensational array of delicious home-made cakes. Children played on the bouncy castle, practised cricket on the infield and had their faces painted. Sales of cakes and sessions on the bouncy castle raised a magnificent £1050, which was shared with the School PTA (Friends Of St Stephen’s School – FOSS), with whom the event was organised.
The sun shone on stalls in the church, courtyards and hall, where a huge variety of items were for sale: handmade and high quality gifts, children’s nightwear, homewares, china, glass, beautiful vintage things to wear, antiques, silk scarves, leather goods, children’s crafts, Indian fabrics, hand embroidery, up-cycled cashmere, Ugandan crafts (represented by Omushana), natural fragrances, Vinnie’s fine jewellery, plants, Mrs James’s delicious home made cakes, Jane’s jams and Charlotte’s preserves. There was a Tombola, and Bottle Tombola, a Raffle, the ever-popular selection of second-hand books and DVDs (including children’s) plus pre-loved children’s treasures and not-quite-antiques from grandparents’ attics. The children bounced all afternoon on the bouncy castle or played quietly upstairs, there was face painting, a toy stall, popcorn and sweeties in beautiful wrappings. Hot dogs from the barbecue were washed down with George’s famous Bloody Marys or more conventional refreshments. The renowned ‘Soul of Shepherds Bush’ bags, seen on discerning shoulders all over the area, were also selling and lots more people bought their very own slate for the roof. Thank you to everyone who made a contribution, helped or came to support the event. We raised a magnificent £3,500.
A Fundraising Dinner and Auction on April 21st 2016 added close to £10,000 to the fund. Donors provided exceptional items for a live auction, a silent auction and a raffle. Bidders attending the dinner competed enthusiastically to win the coveted lots, which included spa days, private visits to places of interest, VIP tickets for sporting and music events, signed celebrity and music memorabilia, jewellery, handmade ceramics, lunches and dinners in top restaurants, designer clothes, holiday vouchers, weekends in country cottages and London hotels, memberships of clubs, tutorials with world class professionals, paintings, prints and drawings. A Middle Eastern buffet dinner was provided by Ayam Zamam Restaurant and the auction was conducted by Ralph Taylor of Bonhams.
The Church held a Gift Day on Sunday 15 November 2015, when a further £1,815 was donated to the Roof Fund. Grateful thanks to everyone who contributed. A Christmas Market was held in the church and hall on Saturday 24 October 2015 and added £3,376 to the Roof Fund. Twenty-two visiting stall holders and further fifteen church-run stalls provided a high quality selection of luxury gifts, antiques, hand made items, crafts from abroad, with tombolas, Christmas cards, books, cakes, jams and preserves, home made refreshments and drinks for all the family.
The 2015 Michaelmas Fair, organised by St Stephen’s Sunday School took place on Sunday 27 September 2015 in the Church Hall and garden and raised a total of £2,425.
